Over 70s Season 2023/24
As time marches on and Baby Boomers refuse to lie down and more cricketers want to continue playing the game we love, there has been increased interest from around the greater Sydney area and surrounding regions for games for the 070’s. This season saw the introduction of several new players to our stock of septuagenarians to take our total number of registered players up to forty-three, many of whom are still competitive playing in younger age groups.
Port Jackson were able to secure games against Hunter Taverners, Central Coast, Western Wildfires and a combined South Coast/Illawarra Side both at home and away. The results were evenly shared with some fine contributions from many of our players.
We tried to introduce a mini carnival between ourselves, Hunter and Central Coast on the Central Coast in October but Central Coast fell over at the eleventh hour. It is our intention to try to stage another mini carnival in the forthcoming season.
PJs O70s State Competition
This year the event was held in Armidale. Port Jackson entered one team in Division 1. The Division consisted of 6 teams, but only 3 games were played. After the first-round games were based on results with the stronger teams playing each other in subsequent rounds.
We won our first match against MNC/Coffs, but came up against Far North Coast in the next round (who had many QLD players) and we were well beaten. Our third game saw a strong win against a combined Quirindi/New England side, seeing us end up in 3rd spot.
Congratulations to Simon Lyon and John Jackson who were both selected to play for NSW in the recently contested Cooper Finlay cup against Queensland resulting in a resounding victory for NSW.
