Over 60s PJ White - Maitland Write-Up

Port Jackson White Captain’s Report

Over 60’s Regional Competition - Maitland 13-17 Oct 2019

We entered the Competition with high hopes. Reducing our teams from 3 to 2 we hoped to have a real crack at winning the Division 2 Plate.

Everything started smoothly with tight bowling against Hunter. Despite them putting on 51 for the 8th wicket we easily chased down the score. The next day it got even better. CC Typhoons were on average 10 years older than us and it showed. We massed a massive score which they didn’t even try to chase down.

So after the day off we were well set as New England had (surprisingly) lost to Hunter. However, this time the opposition was much stiffer. At 1/88 we were looking good, but a monumental collapse saw us 5/99 and eventually 148 all out, about 30 runs short of what we needed. New England started fast and were 3/86 off only 16 overs. A great effort by our slower bowlers slowed the run rate dramatically but they got there with just over 2 overs to spare. Definitely one that got away.

The good news was that we still made the final due to our superior quotient. So we were really looking forward tour match against Central Coast Cyclones.

We were well and truly beaten by a better team. Their early batting was strong allowing them to attack throughout. Our fielding held up well and we did hold them well in the last 10 overs as the score could have easily been much greater.

Our batting just fell apart, partly due to the skills of their opening bowlers, and partly due to the tiredness of our batsmen. From 8/47 we go the score up to 94, thanks mostly to Ian Iveson.

We had a great squad and I think we certainly had a win in the social stakes. Many thanks to our Manager, Stue Clark, who managed everything so well and with boundless energy. He fostered a great camaraderie amongst the players.

Already looking forward to next year and going one better!
