Success for Port Jackson in Orange!

Port Jackson Over 50s Convenor's Report

What a great Over 50s State Tournament for Port Jackson! The results speak for themselves, our Port Jackson Red team, lead by Warwick Hayes bringing the Paul Barnes Trophy home from our inaugural win in 2017 after a very hard fought final match against the Riverina – simply first class opposition and could have easily retained their title from 2018.

A very different side from the

inaugural win in 2017 with Alan Willmore being the only remaining member of that 2017 team. Fantastic to see so many new faces from a range of clubs and associations.

Congratulations too to Darren Smith, being the Port Jackson Regional Player Award winner.

In division two, our Port Jackson White side came in a very respectable 3rd position. I do look forward to reading each of the manager’s write ups as soon as they are ready.

The title success aside, this tournament was a great success even before a ball was bowled. For the first time in Port Jackson history we were able to field four teams from across the Greater Sydney Region – just a fantastic result for Veterans Cricket across Sydney (thus the birth of the Port Jackson SHB Grey team; Sydney Harbour Bridge Grey - yes that is a real colour!).

What was so pleasing to see was so many new faces across our squad, showing the depth and excitement for representative cricket across the Veterans Cricket landscape. Looking at the spread of players from clubs from all associations (Sydney Masters/Classics, Shires, local park and Grade), this truly was the representation of the Greater Sydney Region.

What was also a great indicator of our depth was the average across the greater squad. At just over 54, hopefully we’ll continue to have very strong squads for some time.

(Note: ages as of today. All players turning 50 in 2019)

None of this would have been achievable without people putting their hand up to assist. Sincere thanks goes to:

Port Jackson Red Warwick Hayes (captain) Michael Hall (manager)

Port Jackson Blue Gary Rowe (captain) Nick Garling (manager)

Port Jackson White Peter Remfrey (captain) Thomas Reaney (manager)

Port Jackson SHB Grey Peter Mullane (captain) Damien Heffernan (manager)

Looking forward to the 2019/2020 Over 50s State Tournament! Go PJs!
